The route from Bagdogra to Darjeeling is believed to be the most scenic hill station train route. So Shakti Samanta decided to shoot the song on the same route.
A few days before the shoot, Sharmila Tagore informed Shakti Samanta that she has given the same dates to another director on which the song has to be shot. Shakti Samanta was livid but the actress managed to convince him and the shoot began without her.
Rajesh Khanna stars as Arun Verma, a young pilot from the Indian Airforce in the film. The song picturizes the young actress Sharmila Tagore(Vandana) on the Darjeeling toy train, who is returning to her hill station home. In the parallel Arun and his friend, Madan has taken a leave. While driving the jeep Arun( Rajesh Khanna) sings the song in Kishor Kumar’s voice by giving flirtatious looks to Vandana(Sharmila Tagore).
Although, while watching the song it seems like it is all shot in Darjeeling. In reality, the director had to re-shoot all the scenes with Sharmila Tagore on a set in Natraj Studio located in Mumbai.
The Art director, Shanti Das showed his outstanding skills by creating a similar set in the studio. The outcome was so good that it didn’t catch the attention of the audience over the portions that were shot separately in the studio.
It was rumored that after completing half of the songs of the film, S.D Burman fell ill and hand over the complete project to R.D Burman. Though S.D wanted to record the song in Mohammad Rafi’s voice, his son chose Kishore’s voice.
This single decision definitely changed the course of the history of Indian Cinema. It was the first time when S.D used Kishore’s voice for five-film old actor Rajesh Khanna. The song Mere Sapno Ki Rani piano notes in Kishore’s voice became instrumental in establishing Rajesh Khanna as the first superstar of the Indian film industry.
It is also believed that Mere Sapno Ki Rani’s keyboard notes were inspired by the 1957 Daniel Flores’s song Tequilla. The Tequilla song was quite popular in India at that time. Despite its popularity, people didn’t know the writer and composer of the song.
R.D Burman used the Tequilla tune as an inspiration while composing the song. Though it’s not the copied tune, was quite similar to the one.
